A Passion for Safety!
How did I become so passionate about safety that it compels me to share this conviction with others?
For me it wasn’t my father’s safety soapbox. “Know your surroundings, understand the risks, and make calculated decisions” was his motto. It wasn’t the safety training I received, nor the dedication to helping others that was instilled in me, during my tour in the U.S. Coast Guard. It wasn’t my career, which exposed me to working with hazardous energies (400C/-125C temperatures, deadly gasses, and corrosive chemistries), that formed this passion.
These events in my life caused me to be commitment to ensuring proper safety protocol was adhered to at all times.
My conviction was formed when I was injured on the job by another’s careless actions. But, it wasn’t the injuries I sustained, nor the 3.5 years of pain and two major surgeries that formed my conviction.
IT WAS seeing the impact it had on my relationships with customers, co-workers, and employees. It devastated my personal relationships, but more importantly it impacted the lives of my children.
As a single father I have difficulty finding validation for the time lost doing the things we enjoyed as a family and the trials it presented in their young lives.
